French Grey Sea Salt with Herbs - Sel Gris (Celtic Grey Sea Salt)
Grey Sea Salt with herbs is known as Sel Gris aux Herbes in France. It is a a traditional blend of coarse grey sea salt mixed with air-dried herbs from the Guerande on the Atlantic coast of Brittany, France.
The salt basin of the Guerande consists of more than 2,000 hectares of salt flats. Since the 9th. C., paludiers have tended these salt flats in more or less the same way they do today, watching over a system of sluices which fill with sea water at each high tide. As the sea water slowly filters through the system, it becomes more and more concentrated until, finally, the water can no longer sustain the salt and the two separate. The paludiers use a las, a flat wooden scoop, to harvest the Grey sea Salt, called sel gris, which is then drained and dried in the air before being stored in salt-drying lofts called salorge.
A fantastic flavored salt, it adds a nice crunch to roast chicken, fish, meat, vegetables, hearty salad, rice, and potatoes.
This blend contains French grey sea salt with a selection of coastal herbs including thyme and rosemary.
